Oh, Bloody Mary – with a twist!

Cruel, sharp teeth hunger for a taste of human flesh. Powerful jaws salivate at the thought of innocent victims. And twisted, gnarled claws are just dying for a manicure!

Something not-quite-human stalks the city streets under the full moon after the gay bars close. As the ravaged corpses start piling up, coroner Becky O’Brien and her unlikely allies realize they are the only defenders who can protect scores of unsuspecting pretty boys from a grisly, bone crunching Death by Werewolf.

Welcome back to West Hollywood, where the drinks aren’t the only things that are stiff! Get ready to howl with laughter under a full moon when Becky, her best friend Christopher Driscoll – who happens to be the city’s resident vampire! – and his quirky boyfriend Troy battle to save West Hollywood’s hottest men from a vicious monster’s hunger.

Brace yourself for another runaway macabre black comedy from the author of Bite Club where you, too, will find yourself trying to discover just what, exactly, is… The Trouble with Hairy.

The Trouble With Hairy edition by Hal Bodner Literature Fiction eBooks

Chris and Troy, the centuries-old vampire and his not-quite-human lover of some 65 years, are settling into West Hollywood—which means they’re moving into a larger apartment. Meanwhile, another series of gory murders is looking uncomfortably similar in the eyes of overweight snack-addict coroner Rebecca O’Brien. It is Becky who has to finally force her work compatriots, the debonair police captain Clive, and the irascible city manager Pamela, to pay attention.

That’s when Chris and Troy come back into the picture.

This story knits the actions of the last book neatly into the world created by Bodner in book one, when the monster on the loose was a rogue vampire. Now it’s the reclusive and inhospitable werewolf world that gets dragged into the shenanigans in the gayest city in America. Clive, Pamela, and Becky are the reluctant humans who have to save the day without causing panic among the mortals.

What’s so fascinating about these two books is that, of all the main characters, only Chris, the vampire, is at all appealing. Clive is the least obnoxious, but he is hardly one’s idea of a best friend. Becky, for all her remarkable intelligence, is frankly repellant. Pamela, whose awful clothing choices compete with her truculent nature for top honors, should be entirely hateful. Troy, the oversexed boy-toy, is a nitwit twink of the first degree, spoiled and undisciplined in every way. And yet, somehow, and especially in this book, we kind of become their friends. There is redemption and there is loyalty in equal measure, which sort of rubs against the general mood of goofball mayhem.

One of the key features of this book that I liked a lot is that the author delves into the hidden personal side of all the main characters—including the murderous one. We learn things we didn’t know, and that helps us get under the characters’ skin and understand who they really are.

All in all, Bodner’s West Hollywood books are oddities, and more enjoyable for that. It seems clear there were more books in this series in the author’s mind, and perhaps he will produce them for us someday. But, it seems, life is difficult enough without having to write books to make strangers happy. In the meantime, I enjoy the nostalgic memories that Bodner brings to his beloved West Hollywood, as well as the absurd bloody adventures of the unlikeliest team of crime-stoppers ever to appear in literature.

The Trouble With Hairy edition by Hal Bodner Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The new book in the WeHo Vampire Series, The Trouble With Hairy, is a fun, silly, exciting, pulse racing ride. I loved Bodner's first novel in this series, Bite Club, which I could not put down, so when I heard the sequel was coming out, I raised out to my computer to download it to my kindle.
The book is a quick read, and honestly if you have not read Bite Club, it's not needed, but I do recommend that you have read the first book to really enjoy the character development in The Trouble With Hairy, which for me made the plot even better because Bodner knows how to create characters where you feel like you are sitting with them while the story moves forward, more than you are just reading a book.
I laughed a lot during the read, which makes the book great, plus I was both surprised and scared for the characters at the correct points in the book. I love the characters Bodner created in the first book of Troy, Chris, Clive, Becky and of course Pamela.
I am not going to give the plot away, I'd rather you read the book (both would be better) and hope you love the relationships, the character growth and the mystery of who the "big bad" is.
Picking up several months after the end of Bite Club, things are still hopping and wild as ever in West Hollywood!

Vampire Chris Driscoll and his eternal boy-toy Troy are looking for a new place since they’ve decided to stick around. Brassy iron lady with a heart of gold Pamela Burnham is up to her usual take-no-prisoners management style. Coroner Becky O’Brien is struggling with her diet in hopes of improving her social life and finding Mr. Right. The annual Gay Pride parade with its attendant festivities are coming up.

There’s also a sudden rash of pet killings and violent deaths. At first seemingly accidental, semi-accidental or suicidal, the incidents prove to be connected, and anything but accident or suicide. The tooth marks on the bones are a pretty good hint. So are the various reports involving a great big dog. By the time an elderly lesbian sharpshooter spitfire catches a naked guy in her lover’s garden, those with the inside scoop are having a hard time ignoring the obvious implications.

The knowledge that a select few city officials are aware of and not unsympathetic to the existence of the supernatural community has encouraged a clandestine increase in – shall we say – new blood. Werewolves, however, are notoriously clannish and not usually interested in mixing with the company of others. Why one should be on a rampage in West Hollywood is the mystery that once again calls Chris, Becky, and their friends to action.

The Trouble With Hairy starts off rather more sedately than Bite Club, more than making up for it in drama and depth. The hilarity and camp certainly put in their appearances – a scene of attempted werewolf-wrangling had ME howling – but the darker serious turns hit some very unsettling nerves.

I finished the first one convinced that if ever I played another urban fantasy type of roleplaying game, I wanted it to be in a setting just like this. I am more convinced of that than ever now.

Vampires … werewolves … bringing distinct inhumanity to some real and all-too-human issues. The nature of relationships, of family, of friendship and love and trust. Makes you laugh, makes you cry, makes you angry, and most of all, makes you THINK.

All that, with oodles more shirtless abs, fashion disasters, toned bods, tight buns, drag queens, hunks and hotties. What I want to know now is, where’s the next one?
