In this novel, the author introduces two unforgettable young adults as he weaves their stories through the context of the Holocaust. David Flatauer is a child prodigy on track to becoming a concert violinist, accustomed to the status and privileges of a fine Jewish family in Paris until the arrival of the Nazis. Elsa Hartz is a strong spirited orphan raised in a horse-drawn wagon in the centuries old Romani tradtion. Their worlds could not be further apart until singularized in a boxcar bound for Auschwitz. This fast moving adventure brings to life the cruelty of this historical period as seen through the eyes of a couple of determined teens fighting for their lives as they struggle with the propriety of their love for one another.

Boxcars edition by Jim Barfield Literature Fiction eBooks

Mr. Barfield draws on his ancestry to tell this story of two young people during World War II. Interspersed with the dramatic story are vignettes of history that are both interesting to read as well as essential to the story. This novel is about two teens whose paths invariably cross in the backdrop of the war. But this book is not just a story for young adults (although the YA audience will find it interesting and will learn a great deal from it). This story can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Mr. Barfield develops this story in such a way that the reader is drawn into the plot and grows into a caring relationship with the characters. My only quibble with this book is that it ends too abruptly for my taste. I hope that Mr. Barfield will consider writing a sequel soon so this story can be continued and we can further enjoy reading about the lives of these two young people.

Boxcars edition by Jim Barfield Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Jim has written a compelling first novel. I found myself glued to it and finished it in one weekend. A few issues though He writes as though his characters know the extent of the holocaust. Nobody knew about it in much detail except those people who were in charge of it. Also the Gestapo didn't operate outside of Germany. The areas of occupation were policed by the local police force that collaborated with the Germans or the SS. These and a few small picky issues that some farther research may have cleared up are the only flaws I was able to find. The story telling moved well but some transition between scenes could have been done better. Over all it is an ambitious work.
I read this book in one sitting. It was quite the page turner. I enjoyed the historical content and the love story that unfolded. I hope that there will be a sequel to come where they survive the war.
Boxcars provides a way for teens to learn something about the Holocaust. It is an easy read, and the story keeps your attention from the beginning. Boxcars gives the reader some insight into what the Holocaust might have been like for teenagers trying to first survive, and then make sense of the destruction of their families and communities. There are enough details to bring the sense of horror from that time, but is still suitable for teens.
Praise to Barfield for "Boxcars". Found empathy for David and all of the characters, and that is key for me.Suitable for middle school on up. A compelling story of survival and love. Would love to see continuation of the saga, perhaps in the new, still emerging Israel. It has been a long time since Leon Uris wrote "Exodus", so maybe Jim Barfield might be the author to put a new twist on that amazing story.David and Elsa must have many adventures ahead of them.
Adventure, drama, intimacy, factual history combined into one fast-moving easy-to-read novel. A little over 200 pages. I couldn't put it down! I learned things I never knew about the horrors of the holocaust, but the book doesn't dwell there. Excellent character development-you really feel their experiences and emotions. Refreshingly clean. I don't remember a single curse word. Fine for teens or any age beyond. I am 59 and loved it. A must read! Thank you, Jim Barfield, for this book!
Jim Barfield's first novel is bitter-sweet without being maudlin and weaves a lovely story of two young people brought together by chance as they both struggle to escape the horrors of Hitler's "Final Solution". It is a story every young person should read, not only for the uplifting message that friendship and love can flourish despite overwhelming odds but also to honor the many innocent and helpless people of different racial, religious and ethnic backgrounds who were brutally persecuted and murdered by the Nazi regime.
Reader described scenery and characters well. I wanted to keep reading, instead of waiting for another day. Read in two long sittings. As in all good books, I want to read a sequel to find out more about the main characters,
I bought mainly because I graduated high school with the author. I'm very proud of his talent and can't wait to see him again at our reunion.
